Graffiti removal from sensitive surfaces such as limestone or historic buildings can be challenging without causing damage. Property owners often seek ways to protect their surfaces from further vandalism and resulting damage, leading to inquiries about anti-graffiti coatings.
While anti-graffiti coatings have been around for a while, long-term studies on their effectiveness and how surfaces respond to weather conditions and pollutants have only recently been conducted.
There are two types of coatings available on the market: permanent and sacrificial.
Permanent Anti-Graffiti Coatings: Permanent coatings will alter the surface type often leading to a glossier finish. These coatings provide short-term protection but degrade over time due to UV light, pollutants, and repeated cleanings. This degradation can cause visual inconsistencies on the surface, necessitating costly removal.
Sacrificial Anti-Graffiti Coatings: Designed to be easily removed when hit with graffiti, these coatings do not alter the underlying surface. After graffiti is removed, a new coat is then reapplied to the surface.
At RGR, we exclusively recommend sacrificial coatings. The products we use have a matte finish and preserve the original appearance of the surface. As a result, graffiti removal is more effective and less expensive for property owners.
