Don’t Let Graffiti Cost You

The unwelcome sight of graffiti can be more than just an eyesore; it can quickly turn into an unexpected drain on your finances. From the immediate cost of removal to the potential for rising insurance premiums, dealing with vandalism requires a proactive and informed approach.

Although many property insurance policies—both commercial and personal—cover acts of vandalism such as graffiti, filing a claim may not always be the best course of action. Insurance claims can lead to higher premiums if the company deems your property at an increased risk of future vandalism. Additionally frequent claims in a specific geographic area can lead to higher premiums for every property within that defined area.

If you discover that your property has been vandalized with graffiti, treat the situation as if you will be filing an insurance claim by taking these steps:
1. Photograph the damage.
2. Contact the police and file a report.
3. Obtain a written estimate for removal.

Before filing a claim, review your policy carefully and confirm your deductible. In many cases, you must pay the deductible before your insurance coverage applies—and sometimes, the cost of removal is even less than your deductible. In this instance its best to not include the insurance company.

When won’t insurance cover acts of vandalism? Insurance companies may exclude vandalism from coverage if the property has been vacant for 60 days, as vacant properties are at a higher risk for graffiti due to less surveillance of the property and a slower response time of owners. These factors make vacant properties an easier target for graffiti writers. In these cases, you might need a separate Vandalism and Malicious Mischief endorsement to secure coverage.

If you are a property owner who frequently encounters graffiti, there are additional proactive steps you can take to mitigate damage and reduce costs.
